Given that acne is, by far, the most common disease in the world, I’m constantly surprised at the amount of misinformation that is passed around about acne treatments. There are so many commonly held beliefs regarding treatment for acne which have no scientific or medical validity. Yet they continue to be passed on from individual to individual. More worrying is the possible results of practicing some of these options.

Here is a list of common acne treatments that should not be practiced:

1. Household cleaning products, even when diluted, should never be used as a treatment for acne. There can be severe problems that arise, including chemical burns, from pursuing this route.

2. Home facial saunas will do nothing for your acne. They can, however, certainly aggravate already sensitive skin.

3. Tape left on the skin overnight and taken off in the morning will certainly remove some dead skin cells and excess oil, but is likely to hurt the sensitive skin, and may cause an allergic reaction in the area.

4. While the rays from the sun do have some benefit, prolonged exposure to them (or using a tanning bed) is not advised. As a matter of fact, this practice can be dangerous if you are also taking certain types of oral medications. For example, taking some antibiotics in tablet form, can cause your skin to be more sensitive to the sun.

5. Sudocrem is an excellent treatment for rashes, but is not effective for acne. This is primarily because of its high content of greases and oils, which are bad for acne.

6. Like the sun, vitamins A and B (in lower amounts) are beneficial for your general health and your skin’s health. However, in amounts that are too large, they can cause other problems.

7. Squeezing your pimples is universally not recommended in fighting acne. Doing so will prolong and make the acne spread to other previously unaffected areas.

There are many other “not recommended” treatments for acne, many of which can make a bad condition even worse. Avoid these shortcuts and stick with a program recommended by your medical professional, or one which is founded on solid scientific and medical advice. If you do this, you’ll succeed in overcoming your acne condition.
