Aromatherapy for Better Sleep

Aromatherapy, as we know it today, has an interesting history. French cosmetic chemist, Rene Maurice Gattefosse, burned his arm in a cosmetics laboratory accident. He quickly immersed his arm in the nearest container of cool liquid which happened to be lavendar oil. The burning pain in his arm was immediately reduced and soothed by the liquid. He was particularly struck by the speed of recovery and how the burn left none of the usual scarring.

Gattefosse immediately knew that he was onto something and subsequently dedicated his life to researching the healing and therapeutic properties of plant extracts. Essential oils are the aromatic liquid extracts from various plants. The oils can be derived from various parts of plants including the fruits, leaves and roots. Gattefosse embarked upon a voyage of discovery, identifying a variety of essential oil extracts and their beneficial properties. Gattefosse was actually the man who first coined the term ‘aromatherapy’ to refer to the therapeutic properties of various plant extracts.

But the use of essential oils for healing and well being didn’t start in the 20th century. Many ancient civilisations have long known of the beneficial properties of various plants and much research has now been carried out to research ancient formulae and identify the healing properties of various herbs and plants.

One of the most popular applications for essential oils today is in the beauty and cosmetics industry.  People have become increasingly concerned that the lotions and potions that they apply to their bodies might contain harmful chemicals. Products that contain natural ingredients and and essential oils are generally perceived to be better than those that contain man made chemicals.

Their range of skincare and beauty products make full use of the accumulate knowledge of the beneficial effects of various essential oils. For example, their Balance range makes use of various anti-bacterial natural ingredients including orange flower water, Ylang Ylang, Rosemary Oil and Aloe Vera.
