Melasma is known to be one of the most common skin disorders especially amongst women. You are most likely to experience facial Melasma during prolonged sun exposure. Various levels of discoloration on the face are commonly classified as Melasma. Dermatologists believe that the rise in the level of female hormones such as Progesterone and Estrogen is the main cause of Melasma. Women during their pregnancy will experience a higher surge of hormones which will add to skin pigmentation on the face.   Most women will experience having “the mask of pregnancy” with evident darker skin patches on the face. Melasma may also manisfest due to the use of oral contraceptives. Melasma is also experienced more by those who have darker skin types.

There are more cases of women having skin discolorations than men. Melasma occurs during the reproductive stage and rarely before puberty.   Melasma is also known in certain cases as facial hyper pigmentation. Excessive exposure to the sun is proven to be one of the main reasons behind Melasma. Melasma may also be genetically transferred in the family.

There are different types of Melasma patterns.   Epidermal Melasma is the mildest condition which affects the outer layer of the skin.   Dermal Melasma is the condition where the skin pigmentation is deeper and would be harder to treat.    Epidermal and Dermal Melasma may both be present in the skin on certain conditions.

Consulting a specializing physician like a dermatologist would be best to get the proper treatmet for Melasma.    Avoid self medication and over the counter acid peels as these may worsen the condition or add darker skin spots if not used properly. A physician will be able to recommend a set of medications and processes that will be best to cure skin pigmentation. Some medications for this condition may be topical while some may be more advanced like laser treatments. A chemical peel would be the most basic process used for skin pigmentations. Some people may not be able to use chemical peels as they may encounter allergic reactions particularly those who have sensitive skin conditions. For those opting for a non-chemical based remedy, Microdermabrasion or what is commonly known as a diamond peel would be another way to peel off the skin inflicted by Melasma.

Parts where Melasma is most noticeable would be the cheeks, upper lip and nose areas.  To prevent Melasma from worsening, it would be advisable to use sun protection like sunscreen lotions. Apply sunscreen protection regularly throughout the face and even the neck and nape.   Further protect your skin by applying sunscreen every 2 hours or so.
