Make up easily contributes to people’s lives from all over the world , and for many thousands of years. It can be traced back to the Egyptian era with evidence highlighting the use dating back even further. However it was previously not only used for visual purposes, but highly used due to the widespread belief that eye makeup would improve vision and deter all bad spirits away. Since then makeup has evolved into many different forms, ranging from eyeliner to mascara wands and etcetera.

 

Mascara which helps to draw emphasis on the eyes, was previously composed of charcoal (identified as kohl) and used by ancient societies thousands of years ago for miscellaneous religious reasons. This form of eye make up in its present form was only really urbanized in the nineteenth century when petroleum jelly was added to the mix however it was still considered a messy substance as it was using a dampened brush to apply it. Although it would stay like that for long periods when it was changed into a lotion-based cream substance; it would be sold with different accessories, such as application brushes and portable mirrors. This was as close as it came to the items which are used today by masses of cultivated population across the globe; male or female.

 

A further product that high in popularity is foundation . The painting of the face was talked about in the old testament which gives an indication of how far back this was carried out. The use of this was to ‘colour’ the faces of communities for centuries. The first commercially-developed foundation for modern day standard use was created in 1914 for actors and actresses and this was using a powder base compared with the more traditional oil based makeup. This type of makeup was so popular, that by the 1940s, 1 in 3 women in the United States would have used it, even with the original formula still being used today.
