Almost everything old is new again.  When my mom was a kid, her mom used rags or strips of paper to curl her hair.  At present, with the trend towards protecting our hair and looking for mild and natural styling solutions, paper curls have made a huge return.

This aged tradition predates styling irons and contemporary appliances, yet it’s still just as efficient as it has ever been.  It works perfectly even on razor straight hair, providing you with soft and bouncy curls. Read on for more beauty advice.

Commence with strips of paper.  It is possible to use onion paper or brown parcel paper such as you would use to wrap something for the mail.  If you are in pinch, you can even utilize paper lunch bags.  Cut or rip your paper into strips approximately 8 to 10 inches long and about an inch wide.  You need to begin with about twenty to thirty strips, just in case you rip some.

Next ready your hair.  Paper curls are ideal in moist hair.  If your hair is too wet it will damage the paper, so provide time to dry a bit more.  Brush your hair with a large toothed comb or big brush, just sufficient to get rid of any tangles.  You’ll start your curls at the bottom layer of hair, nearest to the base of the head.  The rest of your hair you can tie out of the way.

Separate a section of hair, about half an inch wide or less, depending on how tight you choose your curls.  Bigger sections of hair have looser curls.  Starting a few inches above the tips of your hair, put the centre of the paper strip against the back of the hair with one end pointing toward your shoulder.  Fold the top side of the paper over the front of the hair and then again around the back.  Your paper ought to now be in a V shape.  After that, roll the V upwards, curling your hair equally around it.  Once you reach the top, just tie the two ends of the paper together to create a knot.  Continue until all your hair is in curls.

Once your hair has dried, carefully take out your paper curls.  You’ll be surprised at the soft, bouncy curls you created using only plain strips of paper.  A little hairspray to set the look and you are done!
